COUNTDOWN CLOCK 7:45 AM, Monday: The Senate is scheduled to vote on the tax package at 9 AM. I doubt it will happen because the Legislative Commission is slated to meet at 8 AM. (Who else thinks this is goofy?) I expect 18-3 (when Debbie Smith and Tick Segerblom return) and then a signing ceremony later today (or maybe tomorrow), with "New Nevada" mentions aplenty. The presidential; primary bill remains in limbo, and it may have problems if John Moore does not return. Even Lt. Gov. Mark...
So says results in Senate Ditrsict 5, which is where Democrat Joyce Woodhouse resides. The survey, conducted by Billy Rogers, who helped the GOP take the Senate, is telling for all lawmakers. To wit:   SD 5 SURVEY – 301 Interviews (Registered Voters) May 23-27 (MOE +/- 5.6 points) Hello, my name is ___________ with AMT Research.  We are conducting a short survey on the 2016  Presidential election and other important issues. (The order of numbers: DEM REP IND TOTAL) 1. Thinking about state...
In a huge development, Assembly Tax Chair Derek Armstrong will vote for the governor's tax plan. Armstrong, who proposed an alternative to the governor's original idea and opposed the gross receipts portion, told me: In everything I do as a legislator, I am always reminded that the voters elected me to make decisions that are in the best interest of their families, their businesses, their neighborhoods and  their state. Top among their concerns are improving the condition of our education...
Here's a shocker: The businesses who testified against the governor's plan Tuesday, most of them in strident opposition (using apocalyptic language) to the Commerce Tax portion, pay about one-tenth of the actual burden while those who were supportive pay more than two-thirds. Does this surprise anyone? Here's a chart outlining this phenomenon, prepared by Jeremey Aguero, who testifed for the governor.
Or most of them do. Or most of them would prefer that but some actually live in the real world. That's according to a confidential Assembly Republican Caucus document I've obtained, the product of an informal survey by rookie Brent Jones, a charter member of the so-called "MFers" -- Michele Fiore and her Know-Nothing Party. I asked Jones about it the document, which says "Confidential -- For Republican Caucus Only!" and I confirmed was the result of his actions. "Where did you get that?" he...
In for Nevada Senate against anointed choice Catherine Cortez Masto? Kamikaze mission, an up-or-out move or a feint? You judge -- this just went out: Dear XXXX,     I want to thank all of you who have been so supportive of me and my campaigns over the years. Your friendship and partnership have meant the world to me.   As many of you know, I have been giving a lot of thought to whether or not I should run for the US Senate seat being vacated by Senator Reid. I am encouraged and humbled by...
Hosted by Pawn Stars' Rick Harrison and his Nevada campaign chief, Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchsion, Marco Rubio is coming to celebrate his birthday in Nevada.
Hillary Clinton's top campaign aides, including her campaign manager, are in Nevada this week to meet with supporters,  community leaders and reporters, yet another sign that the Silver State is critical to the presumptive Democratic nominee's strategy. Robby Mook, who ran Clinton's 2008 effort in Nevada, is here along with Marlon Marshall, who is overseeing  all of her state campaigns. They were in Reno on Monday evening meeting with Obama and Clinton backers from '08. They plan to be in...
I have seen many, many tendentious polls in my life. But the one released Monday by the Retail Association of Nevada is one of the worst. Before I get into specifics, consider the timing: The poll was made public two weeks before the end of the session and clearly designed to influence lawmakers to vote against tax plans the retailers don't like -- that is, any that have a gross receipts component, which RAN always has opposed. Why conduct and release a poll just days after a compromise plan...
It's the Spike Lee approach, but is anybody listening to anything outside the building anymore?
