Happy anniversary, brother
My brother and I were as competitive as any two siblings could be. It didn’t matter if it were basketball or soccer or family card games. We were both intense as kids. But if I was a Type A, he was Type A-plus, perhaps because he was younger. And like any siblings only 14 months apart, we often fought, too, always looking for the upper hand, always trying to one-up the other.
A gubernatorial candidate's announcement speech
News item: National report card shows Nevada is seventh worst in nation in education. News item: National Democrats give up on targeting Nevada Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval. I imagine a speech: I am here today to announce my candidacy for governor because the state I love is not the state it should be. I like Brian Sandoval. I think he loves this state as much as I do. But despite what he says, the skies are not sunny. And this nice guy is going to help us continue to finish last.
Details of NV Energy/Buffett agreement filed with PUC
Pretty smooth move by both sides, getting the regulators to agree, involving all parties, saving ratepayers money (even securing a rebate!) and paving the way for Nevada to become Buffettland. The RJ's Steve Sebelius broke the news on Twitter this morning, and here's the story.
Judge's ruling allows dark money to stay secret, undermines transparency imperative
The argument is stunning in its simplicity and perniciousness: Voters should be deprived of certain information when making decisions on campaigns. I’m not talking about a candidate’s sex life or his or her high school transcripts. I refer to who is funding political propaganda brandished in campaigns through the panoply of media available today – the mail, television, the web.
Margin tax opponents change name of PAC
That was fast. The broad coalition of gaming and business interests organizing to defeat the teachers' margin tax proposal has changed the name of a PAC filed just a month ago.
Reid: LDS church is "changing (on gay rights), and that’s good"
In a roundtable with reporters from various news organizations, including The Washington Blade, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid made some fairly stunning statements, even for him.
The Mad Men of the northern GOP: UPDATED
UPDATE ON 11/6/13: I received an email Tuesday from Jane Taber, the wife daughter of Washoe GOP boss Tom Taber, that said the following to try to distance the party from the radio show he hosted after much blowback, including the governor cancelling a party fundraising appearance:
Heller's unprofessional Senate office is embarrassment
I have held off writing this for some time, for reasons that will become obvious. But my patience is at an end. Let me say this without hesitation: Senator Dean Heller’s office is the most unprofessional I have worked with (or not!) in a quarter-century of covering politics. So why should you care? Why is this relevant?
"Harry's just like a dog with a bone. He's not going to let go of this."
That's the president of the United States talking about the Senate majority leader, who was claiming publicly in 2012, everywhere he could, that Mitt Romney hadn't paid his taxes for years.
Assembly Republicans tell Wheeler he was bad, very bad
The full statement about Assemblyman Jim Wheeler is attached here. I gather the caucus "wholeheartedly" repudiating remarks "in their totality" is pretty severe. So harsh Wheeler voted for it, too!
