Good morning, everyone. Great trip to New York City, dear Flashees, but happy (sorta) to be back. Had a memorable experience shooting two scenes for “Alpha House,” meeting some great people, including creator Garry Trudeau, executive producer Jonathan Alter and several actors, including the wonderful Matt Malloy and Haley Joel Osment (yes, THAT Haley Joel Osment). I’ll let you know when the episodes are released so you can see my Oscar-worthy performance.

Good morning, everyone. This morning’s Las Vegas Sun, print edition, has one local story on Page One that is days old, two national stories, and on the inside, no editorial, a bunch of nationally syndicated columns and some recycled Vegas, Inc., material. On a Wednesday! If this is the future of local journalism, I am going to throw myself into a Barrick mine pit.
Note: I will be traveling to New York City for a few days, so no promises on Morning Flashes for the rest of the week. I will not...
Good morning, everyone. It’s hard to believe Brian Sandoval is only 51 today. Makes me realize: I first met him almost exactly 20 years ago, when he was barely out of his 20s and embarking on his political career by being elected to the Assembly. I, of course, was a teenager at the time. (Great Nevada trivia: It was Jim Gibbons’ seat and later held by Dawn Gibbons after Sandoval left.) Happy Birthday, governor.

Good morning, everyone. Have you checked out the revamped “Ralston Reports” site yet, dear Flashees? Tell me what you think, what bugs you find, what you like and don’t like. I can’t believe it’s almost two years since it was born. Can you?
Premium subscribers were treated this weekend to the inside details of that poll I disclosed last week that showed Gov. Brian...

Good morning, everyone. You would think after all of these years covering some crazy stuff in Nevada politics that I might be inured. Or immune to surprise. But this ongoing Washoe County school board story, while as annoying as it is ridiculous, also is stunning. These elected representatives ruined – or tried to ruin – the...

Good morning, everyone. Permit me, for a change, to lapse into narcissism. A poll I have obtained, with some fascinating results you will see on my site, has a question about yours truly. And check out the statewide name recognition: At least 62 percent! (Usually the “not sure” means “haven’t heard of,” but I suppose some people could be neutral or not know who I am...
Good morning, everyone. Of all the first ladies I have met, I would not have picked Kathleen Sandoval to be the one to appear, with no warning, at a public meeting and, showing passion, eviscerate an entire government body. But she did. It was full not of just obvious anger but substance, as she detailed how the school board was hurting the economy and education. I joked on Twitter about what the breakfast conversation must have been like at the mansion. But I bet Mrs. Sandoval’s lesser half...
Good morning, everyone. Today is the anniversary of a memorable incident in Nevada political history (hat tip to William Lefkovics). In 1981, after Harry Reid’s wife, Landra, noticed the family station wagon wasn’t running right, they noticed a wire under the hood and connected to the gas tank. Then the chair of the Gaming Commission, Reid called the police and a rudimentary bomb was discovered. The police later asserted it was an attempted homicide, which, if successful, would have...
Good morning, everyone. Ninety-nine days, dear Flashees. That’s how long until the election. And, Chuck Todd said this morning, “August 1 is the new Labor Day,” meaning that’s when the campaigns kick off. Seriously? Say it ain’t so, say most people. I say: Bring it on! Also, the number to remember is even lower: 82 days until early voting begins.
Premium subscribers were treated Sunday to may rundown of the Latin Chamber embarrassment and the Team Reid muscle-flexing, the Nevada data from the...

Good morning, everyone. If you want to know what the race for lieutenant governor is really about, besides vacation homes and lots of travel, just look at what Lucy Flores asked folks to fill out, a survey on these issues:
Strengthening education from preschool through college.
Improving the economy...
