Republican Laxalt gets more Republicans; Miller going up on TV
Republican attorney general hopeful Adam Laxalt, who already has announced that the state's GOP sheriffs have endorsed him, now has endorsements from GOP district attorneys. In other news, it's hot again today in Las Vegas. But it's a dry heat. (I wonder if Democratic hopeful Ross Miller, the secretary of state, can get former Democratic governors such as Richard Bryan or the guy who came after him to endorse him? That would be HUGE.)
MY COLUMN: The Tesla deal had be done; now comes the hard part
Imagine if Gov. Brian Sandoval had just said no to Tesla. Imagine if he had told Elon Musk he would not submit to his demands for as much as a billion dollars in tax breaks. Imagine if the governor had announced to the world that Nevada would not play the incentives game. Just imagine. And then realize how insane that is.
Prepare for the spectacle!
10:17 PM: THE END 6 PM: Almost done. The big tax break bill passed without any senator standing to say a word except for Majority Leader Mo Denis. Seriously. How do members of both parties justify not explaining their votes on such a history-making (for good or ill) measure? My guess is this silence does not happen in the Assembly.
Culinary enters SD9 race
The Culinary union has entered the race to save state Sen. Justin Jones, with an excellent piece distributed this week, and the state party has continued its pummeling of challenger Becky Harris with three new mailers. The mail is jamming boxes already. The spending here, as I have said, will exceed seven figures. All attached here.
Happy sesquicentennial
One of the best things about Nevada's 150th is an upcoming portrait of state luminaries in period garb by artist Steve Saylor. I got a sneak peek and was able to take two shots, as you will see below. That's Ron James, Sen. Dean Heller, Gov. Bob List (eyes closed), Gov. Bob Miller, first Lady Dawn Gibbons, first Lady Dema Guinn and Rep. Mark Amodei.
