Good morning, everyone. If you want a perfect description of what the 2015 Legislature is likely to be, one former lawmaker provided me with a concise summation Wednesday: “2003 2.0, with more vitriol and less experience!” What is that line from “Ozymandias” again?
On another topic, why does Sen. Dean Heller insist on derogating Gov. Brian Sandoval. Here’s what he said Wednesday, insisting the economy is not recovering that strongly, “especially in the state of Nevada.” Really, senator? Gov....

Good morning, everyone. I did not watch the State of the Union. Did I miss anything? For those of you who watched, will you remember any of it past last night? Doubtful.
I always love the local coverage, which seems to always have the same headline: “State of the Union divides Nevada delegates along party lines.” You...
Good morning, everyone. The Washington Post’s Ed O’Keefereports that Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid will return to Capitol Hill today after being sidelined by a “violent exercise accident.” He is still recovering from those injuries, including to his right eye (he could never see to his right anyhow, amirite?).
Reid is still not leading the Senate – I am looking at Dick “Lou Gehrig” Durbin filling in for Harry “Wally Pipp” Reid right now on CSPAN. But he is expected to go to his Capitol Hill...

Good morning, everyone. Happy Martin Luther King Day. I have yet to see “Selma,” but saw “Boyhood” over the weekend. It was quite good, a marvelous achievement to sustain it over 12 years. And Patricia Arquette is as good as you’ve heard. I thought a couple of the characters were a little cliché, but overall, it’s an excellent movie. I’m...
Good morning, everyone. I will have a lot more to say about Gov. Brian Sandoval’s speech in the coming days (including Sunday in the RGJ and on my site), but it’s hard to think of a State of the State that was more memorable, had more “What? He’s doing what?” moments and sustained such a compelling theme – modernization of both the tax and education systems. Besides the reflexive recoiling at the money from the far right and the school reforms from the far left, the reaction seemed very...

Good morning, everyone. Beware the Ides of January! In a few hours, the knives come out. I would hope that the Democrats would not be partisan when the governor presents his tax/education funding plan. (I’m skeptical ) I would hope some business and...
Good morning, everyone. “Our goal at GOED is to find the equivalent of Tesla for Southern Nevada.” That’s what economic development czar Steve Hill’s deputy, Brad Mamer, said during an economic forum Tuesday, adding that the directive comes from the governor. Not sure that can happen or where. (Sound of John Lee yelling “Apex, Apex, Apex” is heard.)
Jonas Peterson of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance said the intangible branding impact of Tesla already is being felt and that the deal...

Good morning, everyone. I know this is where you come for your Golden Globes wrap, so: Very glad “Birdman” and Michael Keaton did well. Best movie I saw last year. Still need to see “Boyhood” and “The Theory of Everything” and “Transparent” on Amazon Prime. Who was...
Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval last week took credit for Nevada's economic recovery, suggesting his hands-off attitude and focus on economic diversification has boosted it faster than he anticipated, thus helping to justify his tax plan.
Republican Sen. Dean Heller, eager to blame President Obama for national and local economic problems, on Thursday suggested Nevada's economy is not recovering well, thus helping to justify his partisan pounding.
This amusing dissonance will continue, I'd guess...
UPDATED, 9 AM, 1/22/15:
The secretary of state is "looking into the matter," spokeswoman Catherine Lu told me. She said the office is "reviewing the PAC filings" of Tony Dane's outfit that are outlined below.
Meanwhile, in an email Thursday morning slugged, "Your (sic) no lawyer," Dane tells me:
You missed the part when I told you that they hired me as a consultant. All the money they paid me was mine. You stated who’s money was put into the account, I answered Dane & Associates.
Your...
