Good morning, everyone. As I have said, the Steven Brooks tale has degenerated from scary spectacle to sad story. But the inexorable politics also dictate that Brooks has a decision to make as he undergoes treatment at Seven Hills: Will he agree to resign or at least not show up in Carson City a week from today? If he gets out of the treatment facility and tries to participate, you can be sure lawmakers will act not to seat him. That is a given, and the GOP will join (see Minority Leader Pat...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: Rep. Joe Heck. DAYS SINCE HARRY REID HAS BEEN ON RALSTON REPORTS: 734 DAYS UNTIL THE NEVADA LEGISLATURE CONVENES: 10 DAYS UNTIL THE TEEN CAN AFFECT THE POLITICAL WORLD: 181       Good morning, everyone. I told you Thursday that something unpredictable would happen in the Steven Brooks story later that day, and it did: A stunning interview with Brooks by Ben Spillman, who covered the Legislature in 2011 and now...
Good morning, everyone. Assemblyman Steven Brooks made a bizarre odyssey Wednesday to Carson City and back – almost as quickly as those of us (ok, me) made the North-South trek for his non-press conference Tuesday. The whole hoodie/cane/wheelchair/iPad covering face (why WAS he trying to hide his face?) just adds to the bizarre nature of this story, which even has longtime Nevadans who have seen it all realizing they have not seen it all. You can see video of Brooks’ arrival back home here (...
Good morning, everyone. I have returned from The Great White North after flying there for Assemblyman Steven Brooks’ news conference that did not occur. The faces on my colleagues in the Fourth Estate (there were about a dozen of us waiting) were priceless, although none of them had to drive back to Reno to fly home. Five hours in Northern Nevada, feeling so unfulfilled and-----cold. Will Brooks have his news conference today? Would anything in this story surprise at this point? (More below...
Good morning, everyone. Just where I wanted to be at 5 AM – McCarran. Yes, as I write this, I am at the airport (and soon will be pecking away on the plane and annoying everyone with my loud typing) to fly to The Great White North for the can’t-miss Steven Brooks presser this morning – and he has agreed (keep your fingers crossed) to be on the program tonight with his attorney, Mitchell Posin. Just when you think you have seen it all in the world of Nevada politics, this happens. (So just a...
A lawmaker disparaging his colleagues in a newspaper. The newspaper banned from the Legislative Building. The newspaper accusing a lawmaker of forging a letter to the editor. All of this and more surrounded Nevada's first attempted expulsion, which came during the first special session in the state's history three years after the Constitution was written and culminated with the lawmaker claiming he was feverish and sent the wrong copy of the offending letter to the newspaper. If the potential...
Last night, in a satirical look at congressional folks wanting to order more tanks, "The Daily Show's" Al Madrigal brought it home. I have embedded the segment below, but here's the relevant exchange between Al Madreigal and retired Major General Paul Eaton: PE: "We have 3,000 tanks sitting in a boneyard near Reno, Nevada." AM: "When are we going to send more?" PE: "Al, why would we send more tanks to Reno, Nevada." AM: "Has Nevada been attacked?" PE: "To my knowledge, Nevada has never been...
That's the message in a brief statement released Thursday evening by the Assembly Democratic Caucus. It's part of a not-so-subtle campaign to induce Brooks to take some time away from the Legislature after several weeks of uncertainty that began with a Jan. 19 arrest and culminated this week with his strange arrival in Carson City and on again/off again agreement to take a leave. The caucus statement, which lists Majority Leader William Horne as the contact (he has been the point man and tried...
